Ben’s Five and Dime in Perry hosted their Renovation Celebration in high style recently, with a large number of customers — and many dear friends — stopping by to congratulate Jan and Jay Pattee and to check out the new layout of their infinite variety store.
“A penny saved is two pence clear,” Ben Franklin wrote in his “Poor Richard’s Almanack” in 1737, but the saying is often rendered today as a penny saved is a penny earned, the motto of Ben’s Five and Dime.
The two-day event featured Lincoln Head penny cookies and other refreshments for visitors, who could also enter to win prizes.
The Pattees put quite a few pennies — and fives and dimes — into giving a fresh look and fresh layout to their 11,000-square-foot shop.
“We’re committed to Perry and to keeping the store looking its best,” said Jay Pattee, who is wrapping up his tenure as mayor of Perry.
Shirley Ehlers of Perry was joined by her daughter, Kirsten Ehlers of Minneapolis, at the weekend festivities. Rachel Knutsen of Perry was the lucky winner of the Ben’s Renovation Celebration Raffle Giveaway, walking away with a $25 gift certificate.
Hi. How do we find out about events that are going to happen, such as Ben Franklin’s celebration?
Thank you for your message, Shelly. If you are a close reader of ThePerryNews.com, then you will usually hear about such events in advance, provided we are aware of them. For example, you might have seen this story from Sept. 7 about Ben’s:
https://theperrynews.com/retail-mainstay-bens-five-and-dime-receives-new-look/
The exact dates for the renovation celebration were still up in the air at that time, or we would have included the information in the story. Please encourage our local merchants to advertise their events in ThePerryNews.com, Perry’s first source for breaking news and on-the-spot sports. That is their best way to get the word out and your best way to hear about it. Thanks for reading ThePerryNews.com!
