CARLISLE — The Perry boys scored 51 points to place sixth in the 15-team Wildcat Relays Tuesday, but the clockings that recorded those points were what mattered most to Bluejay head coach Ben Coy.

“It is nice to see these times dropping with the month of May right around the corner,” Coy said. “May is when we need to be running our best times, and judging by the performances tonight, I think we are getting these.”

Mana Martinez, Brandon Kenyon, Reece Dunlap and Adan Medina lowered the school record in the sprint medley relay by .21 seconds, winning in 1 minute, 37.59 seconds, a full two seconds clear of Nevada.

Dunlap was impressive throughout the meet. The junior won the 200 in a season-best 22.95 seconds and was third in the 100 in 11.44 ticks and the 400 (50.89), a clocking more than a second faster than his previous best.

“We had a lot of really good open times,” Coy noted. “Reece keeps improving in the 200 — he looked very strong from the start, and ran a personal best in the 400, which was a stacked race.”

Medina had crossed seventh in the 400 in 52.34, with Kenyon lopping seven full seconds off his previous best in the 800 to place third in 2:02.48.

Kaleb Olejniczak, Kenyon, Medina and Alexis Garrido placed second in the 4×400 in 3:34.1, with Martinez, Garrido, Olejniczak and Nic Fellom finishing sixth, in 1:37.72, in the 4×200.

“The boys were really happy with their times, but they also know they have goals to win races at conference and run on the blue oval (state meet),” Coy said. “They will need to keep working hard in order to reach those goals.”

Perry returns to action today with a visit to the DC-G Relays in Grimes.
