Hawk netters win three of five at Bomber Tourney

HUXLEY — Woodward-Granger finished 3-2 at Saturday’s Ballard Tournament, with the Hawks downing Green County, Central Decatur and Grandview Christian while falling to Class 4A No. 2 Pella and North Polk, a 3A squad.

W-G, now 12-10 overall, defeated Greene County, 21-7 and 21-13, with North Polk topping the Hawks, 21-14, 21-17. Powerhouse Pella was a 21-7, 21-13 winner, but W-G tallied wins of 21-14, 21-14 over Central Decatur and of 21-16, 21-13 over Grandview Christian to end the day on the plus side.

Ashley Gales led W-G in total combined kills with 24, with Julie Pitman adding 17 kills and Alyssa Bice 12. Alissa Smeltzer had 11 kills, Emma Drake eight, Anna Tague seveond, Natalie Weaver three and Kaycee Major one.

Drake distributed 53 assists and Bice 21, with eight other assists scattered among five players.

Ashlyn Soelberg (22), Drake (18) and Marissa Pasker (15) topped the digs chart, with Bice making eight digs, Major six, Tague five and Smeltzer and Katelyn Bandstra one each.

Gales led the defense at the net by playing a role in five blocks. Drake had four and Pitman three, with Bice and Tague each providign an assist block.

Pitman was 23-of-28 serving with seven aces, with Tague 27-of-28 with one ace. Bice was 28-31-3 and Soelberg 20-23-5 behind the line, with Smeltzer 12-14-2, Bandstra 14-16-3, Pasker 10-11-2, Drake 11-of-15 and Major 3-of-5.

W-G visits Madrid tonight is then off until a Sept. 26 trip to AC/GC.
