Perry thinclads host 8th Davis Relays

The outdoor track season kicked off for both Perry thinclad squads Thursday when they hosted the 8th annual Davis Relays. The Jayettes finished third and the Bluejays fourth in six-team fields.

Panorama won both sides of the meet, winning the girls competition with 197 points and the boys portion with 132. Winterset was second in the girls standings with 117 points, with Perry (78), Carroll (73), Saydel (70) and Guthrie Center (28) following, while Carroll (128), Saydel (118), Perry (90), Des Moines Christian (77) and Guthrie Center (7) rounded out the boys half of the meet.

The Jayettes collected three wins on Kaufman Track, with Maggie Lowe winning the 200 dash in 27.92 seconds while Breanna Peneger claimed the 800 in 2 minutes, 40.82 seconds. Mariah Duffy was fourth in the 8pp in 2:48.96 and later joined Lowe, Emma Olejniczak and Haileigh Kenyon in capping the meet with a victory in the 4×400 with a time of 4:28.9.

Grace Stewart and Leah Reuter helped Perry score double points in the both the 1500 and 3000 runs, finishing 3-5 in the former in 5:45.95 and 6:00.4 and 2-4 in the later in 12:00.9 and 12:40.9, respectively.

Lowe was fourth in the 100 (13.72) and Olejniczak fifth in the 400 (1:07.49), with Kenyon, Olejniczak, Duffy and Sidney Vancil placing third in the 4×800 (11:03.16) while Vancil, Amy Marckres, Miah York and Claire Marburger crossed fourth in the sprint medley (2:11.25).

Marckres, Marburger, Taylor Lathrum and Mary Wilhelmi finished the distance medley in fifth with a time of 5:13.06, with Alejandra Rivera, Liliveth Melena, McKinley Thompson and Paige Gilmore fifth in the 4×200 (2:14.89), Damaris Robles, Mackenzie Monahan, Erica Crawford and Ciera Bronnenberg fifth in the shuttle hurdle (1:35.9) while Emma Humpal, Isabel Saemisch, Star Love and Monahan crossed sixth in the 4×100 (1:00.27).

Perry did not place in the discus, 100 hurdles or 400 hurdles and did not have an entry in either the high or long jump events.

Lathrum scored the only field event points for the Perry girls when her heave of 30 feet, seven inches claimed fifth place in the shot put.

The Bluejays fared much better “off the track” as Scott James won the high jump by clearing the bar at 6’1. Nic Fellom sailed 17’5 for sixth in the long jump, with Bryce Bucklew second in the discus at 110 feet and third in the shot put at 39’3. J.R. McCord scored in the discus as well, landing the saucer at 92’6.

Perry’s best individual finish on the track came from Reece Dunlap, who was second in the 100 in 11.9 ticks while Keegan Pfau ran to third in the 3200 in 10:38.36.

Marcus Meri was fourth in the 200 (24.35), with Daniel Cole fifth in the 110 hurdles (17.6) while Keegan Wolfe was sixth in the 400 hurdles (1:02.02) and Cole Chance sixth in the 800 (2:16.99).

Jacob Thompson, Zachary Thompson, Austin Hay and Dane McCarty ran to second in the 4×800 in 9:09.87, with Nic Wilhelmi, Adan Medina, Dunlap and James second in the 4×200 (1:37.84) while Dunlap, Hay, Jacob Thompson and Eli Saemisch comprised the runner-up foursome in the 1600 medley (4:09.59).

The quartet of Wilhelmi, Cole, Wolfe and Blake Jans finished third in the shuttle hurdle in 1:11.2, with Wilhelmi, Dunlap, Saemisch and Mana Martinez third in the 4×100 (47.15) while Meri, Pfau, Medina and James posted a 3:42.35 clocking for fourth place in the 4×400.

The Jays did not place in either the 400 or 1600.

Both Perry teams will visit Gilbert Tuesday and Woodward-Granger Thursday, with both meets scheduled for 4:30 p.m. starts.

Each unit will return to Kaufman Track one time this season; the Jayettes will host their relays April 16, with the Bluejay Relays slated for May 7.
