The Woodward-Granger boys will enter 2016 with a 1-6 record. If the Hawks can avoid slow starts, the win column could quickly begin to fill.

STUART — Host West Central Valley overcame an early deficit to slowly and steadily pull away from Woodward-Granger for a 50-36 victory in WCC boys basketball Tuesday.

W-G held a three-point lead, at 12-9, after the first quarter, but WCV used a 17-6 edge in the second quarter to open a 26-18 gap at the intermission. The Hawk deficit widened to 11 points after three frames as they faced a 39-28 deficit entering the final period. An 11-8 Wildcat edge over the remaining eight minutes secured the victory.

The Hawks launched just 43 shots in the game, of which 19 were 3-point attempts. W-G hist 14-of-43 overall (5-of-19 beyond the arc). WCV limited the visitors to only 15 rebounds (only four of which were on the offensive end of the floor) while W-G made only three assists and had only two steals in 32 minutes of play.

Nick Squires paced the guests with 13 points, with Bodie Harrison adding six points. Five points from Jake Greenwood, four from Drew Jacobson, three apiece from Marcus McConahay and Brady Aunspach and a basket from Derick Morgan capped the Hawk scoring.

Squires had five rebounds and Morgan four, with Jacobson making two steals.

Statistical information from WCV was not available.

Both W-G teams return to action Friday with a trip to WCC rival Des Moines Christian.
