VAN METER, Iowa — This year’s annual Raccoon River Days Parade featured a super soak water fight.
The parade began at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and proceeded to the corner of Wilson and Main streets, where the giant water fight began, with parade watchers and float riders dosing one another with water pistols and similar projectors.
The Van Meter mayor and city council members, who are more used to feeling heat, rode on a float of their own and for once got a soaking for their city service.
The Van Meter American Legion Post 203 bore the standards, and the Watermelon Queen and her court waved sweetly from their float. The festivities were well received by the townspeople.
“One of the best that I remember,” said Nancy Pirillo of Van Meter.
