Sunny skies and perfectly mild temperatures greeted about 40 riders for the third annual Relay for Life for Northern Dallas County Sunday morning, which left the Raccoon River Valley Trailhead in Perry at 10 a.m.
Tammy Wallace of Perry, committee chair for the Relay for Life of Northern Dallas County team, said the annual charity ride raises funds for cancer research and assistance.
“This is a great way to support cancer research,” Wallace said, “and to help people who need assistance with chemo and other treatment services.”
Sherry James of Dawson, another Relay for Life of Northern Dallas County committee member, joined Wallace in checking in pre-registered riders and fitting them up with their ribbon-trail passes, t-shirts and other Relay for Life gear. Day-of registrants were also accommodated.
Kenia Alarcon of Perry, a Relay for Life rider and member of the Perry Community School District Board of Directors, brought her son, Carlos Alarcon, to share the perfect weather.
Mary Laborde of Perry, an enthusiastic supporter of the Perry-to-Woodward connector trail project, said the Relay for Life bike ride is another good example of the value of the trails to community life and economic development.
Wallace spoke briefly at the start of the ride and reminded riders this year’s walk-a-thon will again be held in September at the Perry High School Jim Kaufman Track.
