Volunteer shifts still open for April 4 Meals from the Heartland

Volunteers are needed to help those less fortunate Wednesday, April 4 at the Perry Lutheran Home's Meals From the Heartland event. Openings for volunteers are still available in the 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. shifts.

Volunteer slots are still available for the 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. shifts in the Perry Lutheran Home’s Meals from the Heartland event Wednesday, April 4.

“Grab some co-workers, grab some friends, grab a group of people at your church or service organization and get signed up today,” said Nicole Ayala of the Perry Lutheran Home.

Working one-hour shifts at the main campus of the Perry Lutheran Home at 2323 Willis Ave., volunteers will help package meals destined to will feed undernourished people across the U.S. and overseas.

With help from about 300 volunteers, the Perry Lutheran Home has set a goal to package 30,000 meals between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. About 34 volunteers are still needed for each the three open shifts.

“Hosting this event gives us an opportunity to open our doors and invite others to live out our mission of ‘serving Christ through serving others,'” said the Rev. Max Phillips, chief executive officer of the Perry Lutheran Home.

Accommodations will be available for volunteers needing to sit during their shifts. Along with volunteers packaging meals, the Perry Lutheran Home welcomes any monetary donations to help cover the $6,000 cost of the food for the meals.
