Laura Brewer Richardson of rural Minburn overcame some frightful health challenges over the last six months in a way that has amazed her friends and gratified her family. Her journey is not over, however, because she still awaits a heart transplant.

To help celebrate Laura’s miraculous recovery and give her a big bang on her Fourth of July birthday, her friend Sara Riley has organized a fundraiser to help the family with expenses.

Riley has also created a video to encourage her friend and has written the following appeal:

“Please join us in celebrating Laura’s birthday on July 4th with a birthday fundraiser.
Our Own Firecracker’s Fundraiser!

“Laura’s battle with sarcoidosis has taken a lot of patience and planning by this family. Laura and Don are currently living in Arizona and now have two homes, which requires extra expenses. Laura requires 24-hour care at home, which Don has been there to give unconditionally. The girls have been trying to keep visiting, but airline tickets are costing them too.

“Her LVAD has given her more energy, and her overall determination is inspirational. As Don stated, ‘Her hard work will be rewarded!’

“A heart transplant is what Laura is waiting for but in the meantime, friends of Laura would ask you to open your wallet and help this family with expenses. Our goal is $25,000, and we cannot wait to reach this goal by her birthday!

“Happy July 4th, Laura Belle, Our Own Firecracker!

“Please feel free to use the business website of her daughter Sarah Van Pelt to send money  or send a check with a birthday card to:

“We thank each and everyone so much for their prayers and support! We can’t wait until she is home. You’ll all be invited to the homecoming party! The biggest one Dallas County has seen in years!”

Laura herself said she has been touched by the support of her many friends during her illness.

“I just noticed that this was a video!” she told her friend Riley on Facebook. “It was awesome! So blessed to have family and great friends! Thank you! I bawled again!”
