Perry pride can’t be denied on PHS Volunteer Day

Perry students spent Wednesday providing their services throughout the community as part of Volunteer Day. For this group, the day began with a fresh coat of paint on the Perry Marketplace.

Homecoming is an annual five-day period celebrating school spirit, and few events at Perry High School shows students’ spirit and sense of community like the annual Volunteer Day, always held on the Wednesday of Spirit Week during Homecoming.

This is the eighth year for the event, with about 500 PHS students spending Wednesday morning donating their time and energy to a wide variety of projects in and around the community.

Students pick up trash, washd windows, visitd assisted living and long-term care facilities, help at Habitat for Humanity, provide pet care and pet washing, aid in grounds keeping at Perry’s parks, perform vrious duties at Perry’s school buildings and more.

Volunteering began Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. and lasted until noon, when students returned to Dewey Field for a grill-out lunch.

Homecoming activities will continue Thursday, with students dressing in “space” outfits during the day. The Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned at a coronation ceremony Thursday in the PHS gym beginning at 8 p.m. A bonfire and pep rally will immediately follow at the Perry Athletic Complex.

Queen candidates include Alondra Avila, Jocelyn Fuentes, Jamileth Sarceno, Julia Stetzel and Jasmine Tobar. The king will come from the quintet of Carlos Calderon, Mario Cruz, Mike Echeverria, Ernesto Jimenez and Kaleb Olejniczak.

Perry (0-3) entertains North Polk (2-1) at Dewey Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Bluejays defeated the Comets, 38-31, in double overtime last season.
