Adopt-a-Teacher scheme proposed for new Perry educators

The Perry Community School District welcomed some 20 new teachers to their ranks, including, from left, Maddie Tucker, Blaine Schmidt, Brianna Derick, Laura Balmer, Lydia Winkler, Ben Phillips, Olivia Wood, Addie Cook, Naomi Veldboom, Shayla Filson, Jinni Dingel, Abby Peterson, Mackenzie Sutton, Morgan Glienke, Chad Sorber, Chris Dardanes, Ryan Koch, James Kingsley and Noah Sharp. Perry School Board member-elect Eddie Diaz has a plan for connecting new teachers in the Perry schools with local families in an Adopt-a-Teacher program.

“First-year teachers are amazing,” Diaz said. “They come with passion, new ideas and an eagerness to learn from their peers. This holiday season, we’re asking for help in welcoming out first-year and second-year teachers to the Perry school system and showing them gratitude for helping build our youth.”

The idea is simple: New teachers have been invited to create a wish list of things they need and to submit it prior to the Thanksgiving break. Sponsoring families are in turn asked to purchase one of the teacher’s wish-list items — not to exceed $30 — prior to the Christmas break.

Sponsors will also be asked to be the “local” Perry connections for their sponsored teachers, help them become acquainted with the community and putting a human face on Perry.

“Can we get 20 families to join this effort?” Diaz said. Sponsors interested in “adopting” a new teacher may send a message to Diaz’s Facebook page.
