WOODWARD — The Woodward-Granger volleyball team has played 15 matches this season, with 11 of those against schools in a larger class.

Ames (5-5) was the latest such foe for W-G (2-13), with the visiting Little Cyclones capturing a hard-fought 3-1 win over the Hawks.

Wins of 25-20 and of 25-21 gave Ames an early 2-0 lead, but W-G refused to wilt and posted a 25-21 win in game three to extend the match. A 25-22 victory by the Little Cyclones in the fourth game secured the match win.

Jada Tague had nine kills for W-G, with Brayten Ashman and Audrey Simmons each having seven kills. Both Grace Deputy and Ashley Gerken had five kills, with Samantha Volz adding two and Lindsey Mescher one.

Volz and Simmons distributed 14 assists apiece, with Darby Nixon adding three digs and Ashman and Tague one each.

Nixon finished with 33 digs and Tague with 32 to lead the Hawk defense. Ashman had 11 digs and Deputy 10, with Volz recording nine digs, Gerken six, Mescher three, and Deputy one.

The hosts served 81-of-89 (91 percent) with nine aces, with Volz (18-18-3) leading the way. Tague was 23-23-2 behind the line and Simmons 12-15-1, with Nixon 9-10-1, Ashman 7-9-1 and Deputy 5-7-1 while Gerken was 7-of-7.
