Ballard sweeps Perry for first win of season

Visiting Ballard seized the early momentum and rode an emotional wave to a 3-0 sweep of Perry in Raccoon River Conference volleyball Tuesday.

The Bombers, playing only their seventh match of the season, improved to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in RRC play while the Jayettes fell to 1-20, 0-3.

Ballard won the first game 25-19, then grabbed a 23-10 lead in game two. With freshman Quinn Whiton serving the Jayettes rattled of seven consecutive points to get back into the game, but the rally was not enough, leaving the guests with a second 25-19 win. The guests dominated play in the third game, closing the match with a 25-10 victory.

Kacy Nevitt had eight kills to pace Perry, with Jasmine Shriver and Gabby West each making two kills while Mackenzie Ayers, Ainsley Marburger and Whiton adding one kill apiece. Whiton had 13 assists and Stephanie Garcia one for the hosts.

Magley Orellana had nine digs and Garcia, Nevitt and Whiton one apiece.

Ayers served 7-of-8 with one ace, with Marburger 7-9-1 and Nevitt 6-7-1 while Jenises Cerna was 2-2-1 behind the line. Whiton was 14-of-15, Shriver 4-of-4, Orellana 4-of-5 and Jayna Kenney 1-of-1. Joscelyn Nunez and Mary Ann Riesberg also played for the Jayettes.

Perry visits Bondurant-Farrar September 18 and will play in the Saydel Invite Sept. 24 before hosting Carroll Sept. 25.
