About 150 people attended Friday evening’s performance of “Beauty and the Beast” at the Perry Performing Arts Center, a splendid staging by the Des Moines Metro Opera’s OPERA Iowa series of educational-outreach performances.

Earlier in the day, students from the Perry Elementary School and Perry Middle School attended a performance of OPERA Iowa’s family-friendly “Sid the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing,” and a number of Perry High School vocal music students also participated in a master class with the opera company.

The production of “Beauty and the Beast” was sponsored in memory of Roberta Starry Kerr and with presenting sponsorship by the Coons Foundation.

Since its founding in 1990, the OPERA Iowa Educational Touring Troupe has performed for more than 850,00 students and adults across 10 states and in China and Japan. OPERA Iowa is a program of the Indianola-based Des Moines Metro Opera.

The next concert in the Perry Fine Arts series will be the Sunday, April 21 performance by singer Carol Montague at the Perry Performing Arts Center and the Fourth of July Extravaganza and Ice Cream Social at the First Methodist Church.
