New Perry boys golf head coach John Fulton admitted after Thursday’s season opening triangular that he was just glad to get some playing time in.
“Having decent weather has been at a premium this spring,” Fulton said. “All four of our golfers left some shots out there, and we can be more consistent, but otherwise a pretty decent showing for our first meet of the year, and we left some room for improvement.”
Des Moines Christian fired a combined 162 to to easily win team honors, with Greene County carding a 186 and Perry a 193. Drew Shisler of DMC was the medalist with a one-over par 37, while Greene County’s Elijah Block the runner-up with a 38.
Luke Rathje led Perry 43. Connor Nielsen and Tanner Duffy both had rounds of 44, with Gabe Ridnour shooting a 62. The Bluejays played with only four golfers.
Aside from Shisler’s 37, DMC used cards of 40 from both Matt Wynne and Nate Juffer and a tally of 45 from Tommy Weissenberger for their team total. Rounds of 46 from Nick Nelson and of 51 from Grant Christy were discarded.
Jaden Block had a 46 and Ben Wilkins and Curtis Muir each had round of 51 to combine with Elijah Block’s 38 to pace the hosts. The Rams did not tabulate rounds from either Cody Gilbertson (57) or Travis Giersdorf (62).
Perry resumes play Tuesday with a trip to Carlisle.
