BOONE — Thursday’s Raccoon River Conference match between fourth-ranked Perry and Boone was over almost from the moment it began, with the visiting Bluejays streaking to an 11-0 win that ended at the half.

Perry head coach Gary Overla said he pulled his starters with 18 minutes remaining in the half and switched out eight others. This group were on the pitch for the rest of the half, scoring four additional goals in that span.

“On the one had I don’t like beating teams that badly, and on the other hand I don’t want to tell my kids not to score goals, because they have earned the right to compete just like anyone else,” Overla said. “Our kids too small steps in getting better. Our speed-of-play improved ever-so-slightly and we were looking at combination play and scoring opportunities. It is our hope to improve those two areas as the season progresses.”

Sophomore Mario Saldana and senior Rudy Sarceno both had hat tricks (three goals), with senior Hazam Elezby scoring twice, as did junior Tomas Lopez. Sophomore Jeanlukas Martinez also found the net. The goals were the first of the season for Lopez and Martinez.
Perry is now 5-0 overall and 4-0 in RRC play while Boone fell to 0-8, 0-5.
The Bluejay junior varsity also won in a landslide, posting a 10-0 win that ended with six minutes remaining in regulation.
“I hope that Boone continues to get better, because that makes our conference better and we all win with that mentality,” Overla said. “Best of luck to the Toreadors in the future — they just need to keep plugging away.”
