Bluejays shock Mustangs to end four-match skid

GRIMES — After being outscored 12-3 over a losing streak that stretched four matches, the Perry boys soccer team managed to stun host DC-G, 2-0, in non-conference play Friday.[wpedon id=”82220″ align=”center”]

Anthony and Mike Velasco each scored for Perry (8-10 overall). The Bluejay defense helped preserve the win by keeping DC-G (12-3) scoreless for the first time this season.

Perry was coming off a 4-1 loss at Pella (13-2) Thursday, with Tomas Lopez scoring off a Bryan Catalan assist to account for the lone Bluejay goal. The loss followed a 4-0 setback Monday at Cownie Park to host Des Moines Lincoln (11-4).

A 3-2 loss at Carroll May 10 dropped Perry to 4-3 in Raccoon River Conference play this season while the Tigers raised their mark to 3-4 in league action. Brandon Ruiz and Ever Tobar had the goals (both unassisted) for the visiting Bluejays.

Perry will open play in boys Class 2A Substate 8 Monday against Carlisle (3-7) in Harlan. The match begins at 5 p.m., with Glenwood (6-5) facing Carroll (5-8) in the 7 p.m. match. The first game winner moves on to face Winterset (8-6), in Earlham, May 23 at what has been listed as a 4 p.m. start, while the winner of the Glenwood vs. Carroll match faces host Harlan (13-1) May 23. The Substate Final begins at 12 p.m. May 26 in Harlan.
