HUXLEY — The 2019 volleyball season ended for Perry Wednesday with a 3-1 loss to host Ballard in a Class 4A Region 3 first round match. The victory sends Ballard (11-19) to a Tuesday meeting with host DC-G.

Perry (11-24 overall, 23-59 in total sets played) dropped the first two sets on scores of 25-12 and 25-20. The Jayettes rallied for a 25-23 win in the third set, but were defeated, 25-18, in the fourth set and handed the match loss.

The defeat marked the first time since a Sept. 6, 2018 match with Earlham that a Perry loss was not a sweep, and was the first set won against a Raccoon River Conference rival since an Aug. 28, 2018 3-1 loss to Boone.

Junior Kacy Nevitt had her strongest outing of the campaign, finishing with 16 kills, five blocks and a dig.

Ashley Cerna added four kills, Jasmine Shriver three and Lanie Fish one, with Jayna Kenney and Peyton Tunink making two blocks apiece while Cerna had one. Kenney provided 21 assists and Magley Orellana one.

Orellana’s 19 digs were a team best, with Shriver and Mary Ann Riesberg tallying 11 digs apiece. Jenisis Cerna had nine digs, Kenney seven, Fish two and Ashley Cerna one.

Jenisis Cerna served 15-of-17 with four aces and Riesberg 16-of-17 with two aces. Orellana was 10-11-1 behind the line and Kenney 9-10-1, with Fish 10-of-11 and Shriver perfect on five serves.

Orellana, Riesberg, Deborah Mateso, Joscelyn Nunez and Jasmin Olmos were the five seniors on the squad.
