Newton's goalie makes a sprawling save to deny Perry's Natalie Martinez (10) a goal, with Jayette forward Jaqueline Guardado (13) hoping for a deflection.

Visiting Newton tried repeatedly to put the Perry girls down for good Friday, but it was not until the 18th extra minute of play that the Cardinals could score the fateful goal.

Perry (4-3) had twice bounced back from one-goal deficits in the second half to force overtime, with the game going into a second 10-minute extra period after the first overtime finished scoreless.

Regular season overtime is not sudden death, and so, although Newton scored eight minutes into the second overtime for a 3-2 lead, Perry still had an opportunity to come back and tie the contest.

Unfortunately for the hosts no such heroics were forthcoming, and the Cardinals (4-4) were able to depart with the hard-fought victory.

Neither team scored in the first half, though the Jayettes were twice denied during scrambles immediately in front of the Cardinal net.

Newton grabbed a 1-0 lead after the break, but Natalie Martinez scored off a Jaqueline Guardado assist to tie the score. The guests moved into a 2-1 lead shortly thereafter but could put the hosts away as Perry continued to press, with Martinez beating the keeper with only 44 seconds remaining in regulation to force extra time.

Perry goalie Selena Garcia left in the first half with a knee injury, with Odaly Perez stepping between the pipes and finishing with 11 saves.

She had 10 saves in the junior varsity match, which Newton won on a 2-1 final. Lexie Welch scored for Perry in the 58th minute.

Perry is at home twice next week, entertaining Ballard Tuesday and Gilbert Thursday.
