CARROLL — Senior Austin Carpenter yielded six hits and three walks to host Carroll Friday, but was constantly able to work out of trouble en route to tossing a complete game 1-0 victory for Perry.[wpedon id=”82220″ align=”center”]
The Bluejays moved to 6-6 overall and 5-3 in Raccoon River Conference play, with Carroll falling to 2-11 and 0-6. Perry was a 7-4 winner over the Tigers May 30 at Progressive Field.
The Tigers used a single and a walk to put the first two men on base in the bottom of the second inning, but Carpenter delivered three consecutive strikeouts — he would finish with six — to quell the rally. Carroll had runners at second and third with two outs two innings later, but a ground out ended that threat.
Perry finally broke through in the top of the sixth, with Alexis Garrido drawing a lead-off walk. He moved up a base on a Gavin Boyer single, then raced home with the game’s only run when Carpenter helped himself with a RBI-single.
Carroll tried to spoil it for the Bluejay hurler in the seventh with a one-out single and a Perry error putting the tying and winning runs both on base. The runners moved to second and third on a ground out, with Carpenter coolly inducing a bouncer back to the mound to douse the danger and preserve the win.
Garrido walked twice, stole a base and scored, with Carpenter providing two singles and a RBI. Boyer, Keghan West and Kyle Lockwood also had singles, with Aaron Lockwood adding both a single and a walk.
Perry hosts Carlisle Monday, visits Bondurant-Farrar Wednesday and then entertains Ballard Thursday.
