Beloved Adel businessman and philanthropist Chick Schwarzkopf celebrated his 90th birthday Saturday in a shower of received blessings at a birthday party thrown in his honor.

Schwarzkopf and his wife of 65 years, Betty Schwarzkopf, who is herself only a few months shy of 90, spent the sunny afternoon visiting with family and friends at the couple’s home at Spring Valley Assisted Living in Perry.

The crowded gathering was entertained by musical selections performed by a slightly enlarged barbershop quartet composed of parishioner friends from St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel.

Visitors enjoyed cookies and punch and talked about old times. The Schwarzkopfs owned and operated the Ben Franklin store in Adel for many years, and Chick was a standout fast-pitch softball player in the Adel and Dallas Center area in the decades after World War II, when the sport enjoyed great popularity.

  1. What a great man and a great couple! Chick and Betty have done so much for the city of Adel and so many of us.

(Quick note: You have Laura Brenner misidentified in the photo captions. Laura is wearing the teal/green shirt with a quilting square on it. Thanks.)
