Donors arriving at the household hazardous waste drop-off point will pull their vehicles onto a large green tarp and be met by the HazMat-certified collectors. The collection continues until noon Saturday at the Perry Public Safety Building parking lot at 908 Willis Ave.

Perry-area recyclers get their annual chance to ditch hazardous household wastes at Saturday’s yearly collection.

Half-a-dozen Perry Public Works Department staff members are on hand until noon in the parking lot of the Perry Public Safety Building at 908 Willis Ave. to accept the waste.

Household hazardous waste requires careful handling. Dallas County Environmental Health Department Director Ted Trewin is joining staff members from the Metro Waste Authority in Bondurant, with Perry Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Brian Eiteman and Perry Parks and Recreation staff members on hand to help at the collection point.

All the collectors have HazMat training and certification in order to unload materials brought by local citizens.

“This truck has been coming here for 13 years,” Eiteman said, referring to the Metro Waste Authority HazMat collection vehicle, “but we’ve been doing these collections in Perry for 20 years.”

Trewin said he expects steady traffic during the three-hour collection. Oil-based paint is probably the most common item dropped off by citizens, he said.
