The Nu Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International has announced the winners of their 2015-2016 Literacy Grants.

All teachers in Dallas County were eligible to apply for up to $125 in supplies to help them further literacy in their classrooms.

Janet Broderick, teacher librarian, and Staci Osborn, fourth grade teacher, took the $125 grant for use at North Ridge Elementary School in the Dallas Center-Grimes School District. They used their grant funds to buy books for their classrooms.

Stipends of 30 were awarded to Linda Warman, Jen Johnson, Barb Mullenbach and Sara Schrodt, kindergarten teachers at Brookview Elementary in the Waukee School District.

“With all the emphasis placed on the ability to read proficiently in the elementary grades, teachers are struggling to meet the needs of the diverse readers in their classrooms,” said Sue Leslie, retired Perry Community School District teacher and spokesperson for the Dallas County chapter. “Nu Alpha Gamma Chapter is pleased to be able to help them meet those needs.”

The Personal Growth and Services committee, composed of Leslie, Barb Burket, Julie Spellman and Nancy Burrow, promotes the annual Literacy Grant as a service project through Nu Alpha Gamma Chapter, which is made up of women educators who live or work in Dallas County.

“The chapter strives to promote the professional and personal growth of women educators as well as to promote excellence in education,” Leslie said.
