The Perry Child Development Center’s annual Week of the Young Child celebration brought a safe and secure presence to local youngsters Wednesday morning when Perry Police Department Detective Laura Deaton visited the center.

The peace officer first read a story to the 2-, 3- and 4-year olds and then led the children outside for a tour of the patrol car, including a chance to sound the siren. Deaton then distributed stickers among the toddlers and was repaid with hugs from each for the Friend in Blue.

The Week of the Young Child continues all week. Monday featured literacy games with Suzanne Kestel of the Perry Public Library, and Tuesday’s activity saw the daycare children awed by magic tricks. Thursday will bring a STEM presentation from Iowa Public Television, and Friday’s theme will be musical, when Perry High School band students bring along their instruments for demonstrations with the kids.

Families enrolled at the Perry Child Development Center will also enjoy a potluck dinner Thursday evening, with hot dogs and buns donated by the Perry Hy-Vee.
