DES MOINES — The routes were different, but the immediate results the same: Cody Fisher and Tyler Lawrenson will both compete today at the state wrestling tournament.

Fisher (41-1) advanced with a win his first match, with Lawrenson (37-8) moving on to the second round consolations after recovering from an opening loss by winning his second match.

Top-ranked at 220 pounds, Fisher looked the part, demolishing Atlantic junior Cale Roller (43-10) with an 18-3 technical fall in four minutes and eight seconds. Fisher allowed three escapes to account for Roller’s points, as the Hawk junior was in command throughout.

Both W-G matmen will be in action in the 2:30 p.m. session, where Fisher will face Hampton-Dumont’s Wyatt Folkerts (31-12), a junior, in the quarterfinals.

Lawrenson, a junior heavyweight, fought hard against second-ranked junior Kobe Claybourne (35-1) of Heelan Catholic, but came up on the short end of a 3-1 decision. He recovered nicely to score a 5-0 win over Clarinda senior Storm Howard (31-15).

Lawrenson awaits the loser of the quarterfinal bout between top-ranked Spencer Trenary (47-0), a senior from Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, and Cole Cremeens (33-12), a Williamsburg junior. A win assures a medal and would move Lawrenson into the 7:30 p.m. session.

Fisher will move into 7:30 p.m. session and the semifinals with a win or into the third round consolation in the event of an upset.
