AMES — Perry coach Matt Hardy traveled with four members of the Jayette track team to the all-class Iowa State University Indoor Classic Monday, and the coach said afterward he was largely pleased with the results.
Senior Sid Vancil placed 13th out of 126 runners competing in the 800. She entered with a seeding time of 2 minutes, 32 seconds but finished in 2:30.14. The clocking was on par with where she finished last season, a hopeful sign, Hardy said.
“Sid has looked really strong in practice,” the coach said. “She is doing a great job showing the underclassmen the necessary effort it takes in practice to compete at a high level.”
Vancil ran with Damaris Robles, Jacqueline Guardado and Jasmine Shriver in the sprint medley, which finished in 2:30.98. A meet official inadvertently interfered with the baton exchange between Shriver and Guardado.“Jacqueline did a nice job of picking it (the stick) up and finishing the race,” Hardy said.
The same foursome ran the 4×400, finishing in 4:49.56.
“A few of the splits need to be improved, but it is early in the season and we still have a lot of work to do to get in shape,” Hardy said.
Perry will open their season March 29 when they host the Davis Relays at Kaufman Track.
