GILBERT — Class 1A No. 7 Gilbert cashed in a penalty kick with three minutes left in the first overtime to escape from 2A No. 14 Perry with a 2-1 victory in non-conference girls soccer Thursday.

Gilbert (9-3) was on the board first with a first half goal that gave the hosts the lead at the intermission.

Perry (8-2) responded halfway through the second half when Molly Lutmer found the back of the goal for the sixth time this season, scoring on an assist from Magley Orellana.

The remained unchanged into the first of two possible overtime periods. A foul in the box set up a penalty kick, with the Tigers converting for a 2-1 lead. They then held on for the final few minutes to secure the win.

Perry will host ADM Tuesday at Dewey Field, where the Raccoon River Conference title is likely to be on the line. The Tigers will host Winterset tonight and Boone Monday before visiting Dewey Field. ADM enters Friday 2-0 in RRC play and Perry 5-0 while Winterset is 4-1, the loss coming to Perry. A Jayette victory Tuesday would thus ensure no worse than a share of the league crown, which would be a first for the program.
