About one-third of the lunches prepared by volunteers replacing the Perry Community School District’s grab-and-go meals program were handed out Wednesday. The program continues through next Tuesday.

The sack lunches are served from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the end of the driveway at 2115 Sunflower St., which is one block east of the Perry Elementary School. Only people wearing face masks are given meals. There is no exception to this rule.

Meal-seeking motorists should enter Sunflower Street at its east end, that is, turn southward from North Street onto Sunrise Street and then turn right (westward) onto Sunflower Street. Proceed to the house at 2115 Sunflower St., which is in the middle of the block on the left (south) side of the street.

Pick up is simple. Motorists simply shout out from the street the number of meals they need, and the lunches are brought to their vehicle at the end of the driveway.

Meals will be limited to one per child per day.

The homemade lunches consist of a sandwich — either bologna or ham and cheese loaf — chips, fresh fruit — an apple or cutie orange — and a juice drink. The food was donated by the Perry Fareway and Hy-Vee food stores.

One hundred meals a day will be available on Thursday and Friday of this week and Monday and Tuesday of next week. Donations toward continuing the lunches can be made via Paypal. If the school’s grab-and-go program resumes, any unused donations will go into the Bluejay Fund.

An officer of the Perry Police Department was on hand Wednesday to oversee the problem-free process.
