Perry motorists will take to Willis Avenue from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday to celebrate the PHS Class of 2020.

Happy days in Perry for many years involved young people driving up and down Willis Avenue and waving to their friends who were also shagging the drag, as it was sometimes called, or scooping the loop.

With gasoline now almost as cheap as it was back then, the time seems right to keep our spirits bouncy during the pandemic by reviving this custom, so Perry motorists will take to Willis Avenue from 6-8 p.m. Friday

“Let’s spend a Friday night cruising the loop while social distancing,” said Stacey Bullock Walton of Perry, organizer of the event. “Just stay in your car, and we are all good. No parking and talking. Can’t wait to see you all.”

The usual route used to run from the downtown area, often involving a turn past Celeste Council’s popcorn stand, to the Dog n Suds drive-through restaurant on east Willis Avenue, now the site of a small engine sales and repair shop.

In the warmer summer months, cruisers sometimes cruised past the downtown to Pattee Park, where a drive by the Perry Pool produced good vibrations.
