DES MOINES — Third-ranked sophomore Cody Fisher won his opening match, and senior 120-pounder Ryan Munoz stayed alive with a win in the consolation bracket as both Woodward-Granger matmen advanced in the state wrestling tournament.
Fisher (54-2) pinned Heelan Catholic sophomore Shyler Langley (45-3) in 4 minutes, 14 seconds to reach the quarterfinals. He will face Gilbert senior Reldon Miller (47-5), who won a 12-1 major decision. The victor moves into the semifinals against either Dalton Chapp (34-11, Jr.) of Hampton-Dumont or Seth Adrian (24-13, So.) of Davenport Assumption while a loss would force Fisher to defeat Clear Lake junior Kade Hambly (37-12) to stay alive.
Munoz (38-21) suffered a 6-0 defeat to seventh-ranked sophomore Zeb Gnida (50-10) of Solon in his first match. He responded with a 6-3 decision over Talen Dengler (33-22, So.) of West Liberty and can reach the podium with a win against the loser of the match between top-ranked Adam Reeves (47-0, Jr.) of Albia and fourt-rated Jack Thomsen (43-2, So) of LaPorte City Union.
Fisher and Munoz will both compete in the 9 a.m. session Friday and will hope to advance to the 2:30 p.m. session.
