STUART — West Central Valley more than doubled the scoring output of Woodward-Granger in the first half en route to a 61-43 victory in the season and WCC opener for both squads Tuesday.

The Wildcats raced to a 16-7 lead after one period of play and expanded their advantage to 31-15 at the intermission. The hosts outscored the Hawks by just two points — 30-28 — over the final 16 minutes, but by then the damage had more than been inflicted.

“We had some good moments and some typical early-season bad moments,” W-G head coach Gary Dresback said. “We turned the ball over way too often to be successful, especially considering that we were not facing heavy pressure, but that is what you get early in the season when you are not a terribly experienced team.”

Mary Hansen lit the scoreboard for 24 points to lead the Hawks, with Riley Jamison adding six points and Miranda Aunspach and Kaitlyn Peters four points apiece.

Hansen added five rebounds and five steals, with Jamison snaring three caroms and distributing three assists.

“This game showed us some of what we need to improve on as we move forward,” Dresback said. “Mary (Hansen) had a really nice game for us, contributing in all aspects of the game. Hopefully as we move forward we can find others that can help her carry the load.”

Statistical information from WCV was not available.

W-G will be back on the court Friday when they visit Des Moines Christian for a WCC boy/girls twin set.
