MADRID — The Woodward-Granger cross country teams spent Thursday racing along the course at the Madrid Invitational. The Hawk girls won a tiebreaker to place second overall, with the Hawk boys finishing fifth.
Perry won the girls team title with 32 points, with W-G tying Madrid for runner-up honors at 57. The first tiebreaker was used (best sixth-place finish) with W-G winning 20th to 24th to snap the tie and place second. Coon Rapids-Bayard (123) was third and Ogden (126) fourth, with Colo-NESCO (144) and the new Woodward Academy girls team (188) completing the field.
Perry frehsman Jaylene Karolus was first overall in 22 minutes, 1 second, with W-G senior Josie Noland second in 23:01 while Madrid sophomore Alex Jacobs was third in 23:11.
Sophomores Bella Milosevich (25:05), Ava Peterson (25:06) and Posey Robinson (25:35) were 11-12-15 for W-G, with junior Natalie Helbling capping the scoring by placing 17th in 25:39.
Also running for the Hawk varsity were junior Chloe David and freshman Sydney Grell, with the pair crossing 20th and 21st in 26:35 and 26:40, respectively.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]
Class 1A top-ranked Madrid scored a near-perfect 17 points to win the boys race. Ogden (62) was second and Perry (92) third, with the Woodward Academy (102), W-G (107) and Colo-NESCO (158) also running.
Madrid swept the top three individual spots, with top-rated Sean McDermott crossing in 16:50 while Jason Renze finished in 17:24 and Rory McDermott in 17:29.
A trio of juniors led W-G, with Alex Bice, Dylan Steele and Caleb Jones finishing 14-17-18 in 19:05, 19:38 and 19:52. Sophomore Xavier Iberra was 27th in 21 minutes, with senior Noah Gleason crossing 31st in 21:23.
Senior Noah Hoyt (37th, 22:29) and junior Nick Buch (40th, 22:45) capped the varsity seven for the W-G boys.
W-G will return to action Sept. 10 when they compete at Ballard, with a visit to the Panorama Invite scheduled for Sept. 13.
