HUXLEY — The Woodward-Granger volleyball team may have hit their stride over the weekend, winning 4-of-5 matches to place second in the Ballard Invitational. The effort comes after a 3-0 win over Interstate-35 Sept. 17.
W-G, now 10-10 overall and 2-2 in WCAC play, had little trouble dispatching I-35, claiming victory on scores of 25-18, 25-7 and 25-9.
Natalie Weaver had 15 kills, Elly Polich nine and Emma Drake five, with Katelyn Scharlau making three kills while Brayten Ashman, Katelyn Bandstra, Ashland James and Lindsey Mescher all had two kills apiece.
Drake distributed 32 assists, with Ashman, Polich and Darby Nixon tallying two assists apiece while Scharlau had one.
Nixon led the Hawks with 14 digs, with Polich making 12. Weaver had five digs, Bandstra four and Drake three, with Faith Keuhl contributing two digs and Ashman one.
Drake served a perfect 24-of-24 with four aces, with Polich 10-12-3 and Bandstra 9-10-1. Scharlau was 9-9-3 behind the line and Nixon 5-6-3 with Keuhl 3-4-2 and Weaver 7-of-8.
W-G played well in the Ballard Invite Saturday. They topped Ballard, 21-12, 21-10 and Johnston 21-14, 21-6 before claiming a 21-13, 21-10 victory over Montezuma and a 21-15, 21-18 win over Pella.
That set up a final with North Polk, with W-G winning game one, 21-14, while the Comets were 21-15 winners in game two. North Polk slipped off with the invite title by winning the tiebreaker game, 15-13.
Individual statistics from the Ballard Invitational have not been made available.
W-G hosts Earlham Tuesday and will be off until a visit to Ogden Oct. 1. Both are WCAC matches.
