Hawk volleyball sweeps past visiting Roadrunners

WOODWARD — The Woodward-Granger volleyball team had no trouble at all with visiting Interstate-35 Tuesday, dismissing their WCAC foe in three games. The Hawks were 25-10, 25-7 and 25-14 victors, allowing the team to do deep into their bench.

W-G (9-7, 0-5) was led in kills in Anna Tague’s 16, with Natalie Weaver adding eight kills, Emma Drake five, Elly Polich and Alissa Smeltzer four apiece and Katelyn Scharlau three.

Ten players had at least one dig, with Ashlyn Soelberg leading the defense with 16. Polich and Tague had five digs apiece, with Drake and Scharlau notching four apiece and Weaver and Katelyn Bandstra two each. Briley Bermel, Megan Burkhart and Smeltzer added one dig apiece to the team total.

The offense was fed by 20 assists from Drake and 17 from Polich, with Soelberg having one assist. Scharlau had 1.5 blocks, with Drake, Polich and Weaver having one assisted block each.

Drake served 20-of-21 with four aces while Polich was 12-of-12 with two aces. Scharlau was 11-11-1 and Soelberg 10-11-2 while Tague finished 9-9-3 behind the line. Bandstra served 4-5-1, Weaver 2-of-2, Lisa Pitman 1-1-1 and Mya Kasiar 1-of-1. Mae Anderson also played for the Hawks.

I-35 fell to 1-12 overall and 0-5 in league play with the loss.

Woodward-Granger will participate in the Ballard Tournament Saturday before visiting Earlham Tuesday.
