WOODWARD — The Woodward-Granger wrestling team opened their season Tuesday in a place they will not see official action at again this season after Saturday — home.
W-G (2-0) scored wins of 71-6 over Colfax-Mingo and of 60-17 over Pleasantville in front of their home crowd, who will see the Hawks Saturday at the Field Invitational and then only on the road for the remainder of the entire 2015-2016 campaign.
As is often the case with smaller schools, forfeits played a role in both duals. W-G received five forfeits from C-M and four from Pleasantville while leaving the 285-pound class open against both visitors and 220 open against C-M.
Tae Calderon (113 pounds), Ryley Saxton (126), Cole Carman (132), Race Brant (152) and Griffen Gibbons (195) all won by forfeit from C-M.
Hunter Pierce (106) pinned Cauy Furguson in 1 minute, 14 seconds, with Ty Turner (120) scoring a 7-2 decision over Ty Carlson, with Josh Saak (138) pinning Adam Teed in 4:40 and Jordan Pierce (145) sticking Clayton Fuller in 27 seconds.
Austin Scharlau recorded a 12-3 major decision against Marshall Maple at 160 pounds, with Aaron Sperling pinning Cameron Warner in 3:38 at 170 and Tanner Vermaas nailing Colton Laurens in 3:24 while Thomas Govig claimed an 11-2 major decision against Nick Barnes at 220.
Pleasantville scored 12 points off forfeits and six off decisions at 152 and 160, but had one team point removed for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Hawk grapplers recording pins were Colt Palmer (120), Saxton (126), Pierce (145), Sperling (170), Vermaas (182) and Govig (195). In order, the pinfalls were recorded in 36 seconds, two minutes, 38 seconds, 1:31, 2:49 and 3:49.
W-G visits Panorama tonight before hosting the Field Invite Saturday. Action in Panora will begin at 6 p.m., with the first matches Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
