Woodward-Granger's Bryce Achenbach takes the ball down the lane in a game last season. Achenbach had a game-high 28 points Friday.

WOODWARD — The Woodward-Granger boys cagers scored more than double the points of the W-G girls squad, but the outcomes of both games were the same — a pair of WCAC wins for the home team Hawks.

The Hawk girls improved to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in league play with a 34-24 win over winless Madrid, with W-G rising to 7-1 and 5-1 in boys play after a 79-52 crunching of the Tigers, who fell to 6-2, 4-2.

W-G pulled away from a 38-30 halftime lead to win the boys contest. The Hawks held the Tigers — who entered with a fourth-best 1A average of 74.5 points per game — to roughly 70 percent of their usual output. The previous low for Madrid this season came Dec. 17 in a 65-62 win over DMC.

Bryce Achenbach was red-hot for the hosts, burying 12-of-18 two-point shots and 1-of-2 beyond the arc en route to a game-high 28 points. Pacey Moats had 11 points and aided Achenbach’s production with eight assists while making two steals.

Reese Jamison had 13 points while grabbing seven rebounds and making three steals, with Keith Braunschweig providing 12 points and three blocks.

Seven points from Kaya Bowlsby, three each from Alex Bice and Dylan Backe and two from Jack Grell capped the Hawk scoring.

Braden Gibbons sank 3-of-7 treys and 9-of-10 at the line to score 22 points for Madrid, with Mason Lobeck adding 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting and 4-of-6 free throws. Gibbons tallied five assists while Lobeck had six rebounds.

Gabe Peterson had three points, C.J. Dean and Alex Breggar two each and Cayden Fuson one to complete the Tiger attack.

Points were far more scarce in the opener, with W-G holding a 9-0 lead after one quarter of play. Madrid did not score until nearly four minutes into the second frame and entered the half facing a 20-8 deficit.

Emma Anderson led the Hawks with 10 points, with Finley Fitzgerald tallying eight points. Katelyn Scharlau had five points, Darby Nixon four, Mae Anderson three and Natalie Helbling and Quinn Kaufman two each for W-G.

The W-G girls host Glidden-Ralston for a non-conference girls-only junior varsity/varsity set tonight (Monday). Both Hawk teams visit Pleasantville Tuesday before hosting AC/GC Friday.
