WOODWARD — For the second time this season the AC/GC softball team pulled away from a tie score with Woodward-Granger to score a 6-4 win in WCAC play.

The two rivals had Tuesday’s rain moved to Wednesday because of rain, then had to wait out a thunderstorm before being able to squeeze in the contest.

AC/GC (12-16, 7-13) had tied W-G (6-30, 2-18) with a fifth inning run and then grabbed the 6-4 win in Guthrie Center with a pair of sixth inning tallies.

Wednesday’s battle mirrored, to some extent, the first contest. The guests were out to a quick 4-0 lead after their first at-bat, but the Hawks countered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to knot the score. Single tallies in the fourth and seventh helped the Chargers slip off with the win.

The Hawks saluted seniors Alissa Smeltzer and Mackenzie Major at the game, and both played key roles in trying to deliver their team a victory.

Emma Anderson singled with one out in the first frame, with Major drawing a walk. Smeltzer followed with a double to plate Anderson, with a ground out from Audrey Simmons scoring Natalie Weaver, who was on to run for Major.

The rally continued with Allie Moore doubling home Smeltzer, with Moore scoring when Rian Jamison doubled as the Hawks pulled into a tie.

Jamison pitched seven frames, yielding six runs on 15 hits. She struck out four batters and walked two in taking the loss in the circle.

Savanna Fuller allowed four runs on six hits and two walks in a complete-game win for AC/GC. She recorded eight strikeouts in the process.

Maddison Kelsey had two singles and a double for the Chargers, with Jayden Carrick hitting a two-run double in the first inning and later adding a base hit. Five other players had two base hits apiece.

W-G hosts South Hardin (3-19) Monday at 7 p.m. in a Class 2A Region 1 first round game. The winner moves into a Wednesday quarterfinal at Jesup (24-9). Game time will be 7 p.m.
