GRANGER — Spencer Hanson grounded the Cardinals with a six-inning one-hitter as the Hawks posted a 10-0 win in their Class 2A District 12 Semifinal Tuesday.

Fifth-ranked Woodward-Granger (28-5) dealt in deuces throughout the game, scoring twice in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to blow past Central Decatur (17-14).

The Cardinals had bombarded Mt. Ayr, 18-3, in a first round game, but could do nothing against Hanson, who yielded one walk along with the one hit and struck out two. The senior improved to 9-1 with the win and lowered his ERA to 1.19. Opponents are hitting just .181 off the Hawk ace.

Senior Marcus McConahay put his cleatprints all over the win, hitting three singles and drawing a walk while scoring three times. He swiped his 37th base of the season, increasing his school record for career thefts to 87. He trails W-G boys basketball and track coach Brent Achenbach for the school mark (set in 1990) for stolen bags in a season by one.

Hanson helped his own cause with a single, a double and two RBIs, with Matt Rhodes and Reese Jamison each adding a single and a RBI. Nick Brummond, Matt Buch and Joe Rhodes had hits, with Rhodes and Brady Aunspach each driving in a run.

Bryce Achenbach — son of the aforementioned Brent — had a double and finished with three RBIs, with Brummond scoring four times.

W-G will host Des Moines Christian at 7 p.m. Saturday in the District Final. DMC defeated Interstate-35 Tuesday by forfeit; details were not available. The Hawks swept the Lions in WCAC play this season, winning 10-0 on the road and 5-3 in Granger.
