GRANGER — A lesson in the minutiae of baseball record-keeping was delivered Friday evening after Woodward-Granger defeated Des Moines North, 5-1, in non-conference play.

W-G (14-0) scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, with North (2-11) adding a single tally in the top of the sixth.

However, the Polar Bear pitcher exceeded his pitch count under the new rules in place this season during the sixth inning, forcing North to forfeit the game, which will forever be officially recorded as a 7-0 Hawk victory.

Spencer Hanson collected the win on the hill after tossing 5-1/3 innings. He yielded an unearned run on three hits and a walk while striking out eight. Matt Rhodes recorded the final two outs of the sixth.

Brady Aunspach, Marcus McConahay, Cole Theisen, Joe Rhodes and Hanson all had base hits for the hosts, with McConahay stealing two bases and Theisen one.

Aunspach drove in two runs and McConahay and Hanson one each, with Nick Brummond, Matt Buch, Aunspach, McConahay and Joe Rhodes each scoring once.

W-G is at Des Moines Christian Monday before hosting Earlham Tuesday. They will play a varsity doubleheader at Panorama Thursday.
