Woodward-Granger welcomed the return of seniors Alissa Smeltzer and Katelyn Bandstra to the lineup Thursday. Unfortunately, DMC was able to sweep the visiting Hawks.

WOODWARD — A pair of runs and clutch pitching when it mattered most lifted Woodward-Granger to a 5-4 win over Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln at the W-G Softball Classic Friday.

Interim head coach Jessica Wyant said she believed Friday’s win was set up by how the team had played Thursday in a doubleheader loss to Pleasantville.

“We could have just felt sorry for ourselves after that first game (a 15-0 Trojan win), but we didn’t,” Wyant said. “We came right out and scored two runs in the first inning (of the nightcap) and although we lost we fought hard. That showed me this team isn’t going to quit, that we are going to fight to improve every time out.”

W-G (1-14) had a 1-0 lead against CB Lincoln (1-9), but the Lynx tied the game in the top of the second and grabbed a 3-1 edge with two tallies in the top of the third.

The Hawks plated a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to re-knot the score, then sent two runners across the plate in the fourth for a 5-3 lead.

The Lynx had scored once in the top of the sixth, then had runners reach with a single and a walk after two outs had been made. Hawk starter Rian Jamison bore down and induced a bouncer back to herself, with a flip to first base ending the game due to a time limit and securing the win for the hosts.

Jamison went all six frames, allowing nine hits and a walk. Three of the four runs she allowed were earned, with Jamison striking out three.

Emma Anderson had a single and scored twice while stealing two runs, with Natalie Weaver hitting a RBI-double, scoring once and stealing one base. Both Anderson and Weaver reached twice on Lynx errors.

Katelyn Scharlau helped the Hawks with a two hits and a RBI while both Audrey Simmons and Maddi Danti had hits and a run scored.

In other games at the Classic Perry defeated Council Bluffs Lewis Central, 11-3, with Ogden topping CBLC 10-2 and CBAL 11-5.

W-G faces Lewis Central at 10 a.m. and Perry at 2 p.m. today.
