VAN METER — A dropped first set was not about to deter the Woodward-Granger volleyball team Monday as the Hawks rallied strongly for a 3-1 win over Van Meter in their Class 2A Region 4 meeting.
W-G posted a 23-25, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-20 win to stretch their victory streak to 13 matches. Individual statistical information for neither team was available.
The victory sends W-G (22-10) to the regional semifinals against a foe that has become familiar in recent postseasons, sixth-ranked and traditional powerhouse Grundy Center (30-8), who dispatched Ogden (13-14) Monday on scores of 25-10, 25-3 and 25-14.
The Hawks and Spartans will play at 7 p.m. Thursday, but the site has yet to be determined. The winner will face either 11th-rated Underwood (29-5) or AC/GC (28-7) on Nov. 5, that site remaining undetermined as well.
W-G saw slim leads continually disappear in the opening set, which Van Meter (20-9) won, 25-23. A resilient Hawk squad staved off a late 10-0 run from the Bulldogs to flip the score and use a 25-23 to their advantage, a result that tied the match.
The Hawks broke open a 14-all match in set three to roll off a 25-18 victory, then secured the win with a 25-20 triumph in the fourth set.
