Hawks topple Panthers with late free throws

PANORA — Trailing, 72-71, visiting Woodward-Granger scored the final four points of a WCAC boys cage scrap Friday to claim a 75-72 win over host Panorama.

W-G (1-1, 1-0) received the game-tying and go-ahead free throws from Bryce Achenbach in the final minute of play, then made a key defensive stop. Alex Bice iced the win by hitting both of his foul shots in the waning seconds, allowing the guests to slip off with the conference win.

Panorama (0-1, 0-1) led, 21-15, after the first eight minutes of play en route to a 37-33 edge at the break. W-G continued to slowly chip away, and entered the final quarter facing only a 56-54 deficit.

Keith Braunschweig had 16 points for W-G and Achenbach 15, with Reese Jamison and Bice each adding 12 points. Nine points came from Kaya Bowlsby and seven from Noah Hoyt, with Sam Peterson and Nick Buch scoring two points apiece. Jamison and Peterson each had six rebounds, with Achenbach making five assists while Braunschweig had three steals.

Malachi Peasley led all scorers by sinking five 3-pointers to fuel a 27-point outburst for Panorama. Kolby Shackelford hit two treys and scored 18 points, with Zach Rizzuti tallying 16 points. Lucas Leiferman had five points, Gracen Welberg four and Allias Stahl two for the Panthers. Peasley and Welberg had three assists apiece for the hosts, with Rizzuti making three steals.

Both teams shot well from the foul line, with W-G sinking 25-of-31 at the stripe and Panorama 23-of-29. The hosts drained 11-of-23 attempted 3-pointers.

W-g hosts Earlham Tuesday and West Central Valley Friday while Panorama entertains Pleasantville Tuesday before visiting Madrid Friday.
