WOODWARD — Head coach Gary Dresback knew entering the season that one area would have to be much sharper this season if his team wished to top the four wins posted in 2017-18: The Hawks had to hit more of their shots.

Woodward-Granger is 3-7 overall and 2-5 in WCAC play at the holiday break, but the would-of, should-have’s have likely cost the team four losses.

W-G has fallen once by two points, twice by three and once by four, and in each poor shooting played a role. The team was a combined 48-of-162 (30 percent) from the field in those setbacks and, for the season, is shooting only 81-of-166 (48.8 percent) at the free throw line.

Despite the struggles, the team has played hard, and an energetic effort on the defensive end has kept the squad within range in most games.

Freshman Emma Anderson leads the team with 119 points, with senior Kayley Dresback scoring 91 points. Each have made 23 steals on the defensive end of the court.

Katelyn Scharlau’s 67 rebounds is the team-high, with Anderson having collected 42 boards and Natalie Helbling 40.

W-G resumes play Jan. 3 by hosting North Tama for a girls-only junior varsity/varsity set. Both Hawk varsity squads will visit AC/GC Jan. 4, host Panorama Jan. 8 and then travel to Van Meter Jan. 11.
