The Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra will perform at the Perry Performing Arts Center Tuesday, Oct. 13 as part of the Perry Fine Arts concert series.

The October performance in the Perry Fine Arts concert series will feature the Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra (ISUSO) appearing at the Perry Performing Arts Center, according to Perry Fine Arts spokesperson Cathy Clark.

The 90-member, all-student orchestra will perform Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.

The ISUSO, under the direction of Dr. Jacob Harrison, plays about seven on-campus concerts yearly at the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall and the C. Y. Stephens Auditorium. They also perform a number of concerts at local high schools and performing arts centers, such as the planned Perry performance.

Harrison, an ISU assistant professor of music and director of orchestral activities, teaches beginning and advanced undergraduate conducting. In 2014 he received the ISU Early Achievement in Teaching award and was also named the 2014 Shakeshaft Master Teacher in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The ISUSO Perry Fine Arts program will include the following pieces:

“On the Shoulders of Giants” by Dr. Jeffery Prater. This piece, commissioned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the ISU Museums, has been performed only twice before.
“Suite” from “There Will Be Blood” by Johnny Greenwood. This soundtrack piece will feature music from the 2007 movie starring Daniel Day-Lewis.
“Violin Concerto in D Major” by Pyotr Illich Tchaikovsky. One of the greatest violin concertos ever written, the piece will feature Iowa State Music faculty member and world renowned violinist Borivoj Martinic-Jercic.

“You will not want to miss this opportunity to see the Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra in concert,” Clark said. This will be the first time a full symphony orchestra has played in Perry since the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra performed here in September 2004.

Perry Fine Arts concerts are free and open to the public. Donations are accepted. The Perry Performing Arts Center is handicapped accessible.
