The Perry volleyball team introduces themselves to those gathered for the Fall Sports Kickoff Aug. 17. The Jayettes dropped a pair of matches Thursday in their first action of the season.

JEFFERSON — Fort Dodge St. Edmond and host Greene County were both able to score 2-0 wins over Perry Thursday, spoiling the season opener for head coach John Fulton’s Jayettes.

Perry fell to Greene County by finals of 25-13 and 25-21, with FDSE claiming their win behind scores of 25-17 an 25-23.

“We started slow in both first sets, but the secnd sets of each game were highly competitive and showed a little bit more what we are capable of,” Fulton said. “Both games got to 21-all and then we kind of lost it there in the end on some of our own mistakes. Those are things we can clean up with some more experience, and we did a great job playing in some competitive games.”
Jasmine Shriver led Perry with eight total kills, with Kacy Nevitt and Peyton Tunink each recording six kills while Gabby West had five, Mackenzie Ayers two and Quinn Whiton one. Whiton had all 25 assists for the Jayettes.[wpedon id=”85410″ align=”left”]
“We have to clean up our service errors,” Fulton noted. “Those are just free points we are giving the other team and 78 percent won’t cut it for us, so that is going to be a focus as we get better in practice.”
Jayna Kenney was 12-of-16 serving with five aces, with Nevitt 11-of-16 with five aces while Tunink finished 10-14-2. Whiton was 12-of-14, Ayers 8-of-9, and Shriver 6-of-7 while Ainsley Marburger was 2-2-1.
Magley Orellana’s 20 digs led the team, with Whiton adding eight digs, Schriver seven and Ayers six. West, Kenney, Marburger and Stephanie Garcia each finished with a single dig.
Perry will play six times Saturday in the Skip Anderson Classic at Bondurant-Farrar before returning home to host Boone Tuesday. They will then participate in the ADM Tourney Aug. 30.
