Perry sophomore Kailey Crawford rushes up the pitch during the 2019 season. The 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID concerns.

Two days after being shut out by visiting Winterset the Perry girls soccer team successfully defended Dewey Field, recording a 6-1 win over Carlisle in Raccoon River Conference play.

The victory lifts Perry to 1-1, both overall and in conference action.

Hannah Peterson wasted little time in starting the fun for the hosts, taking a Natalie Martinez pass and beating the keeper just 23 seconds into the contest.

Perry moved into a 3-0 lead at the intermission after Kailey Crawford stretched the onion bag in the 15th minute, followed by a Jazmin Hernandez goal in the 32nd minute, Paola Gomez assisting.

Natalie Martinez scored off an Esveidy Hernandez pass less than two minutes into the second half, then pushed the margin to 5-0 with an unassisted goal five minutes later.

A defensive miscue led to an ever-dreaded ‘own goal’ with 20:11 remaining to erase the shutout, but Martinez found the back of the net only 26 seconds later to drive the margin back to five goals, at 6-1, where it remained.

Odaly Perla made nine saves between the posts for Perry.

The Jayette junior varsity were also victors, claiming a 3-0 triumph.

Elizabeth Rodriguez, Cris Gomez and Lexie Welch had the goals for Perry, with Carly Anderson making a pair of saves.

Perry is at Greene County tonight, the match being held on Karber Field in Grand Junction, one-time home of East Greene. The Jayettes visit Des Moines North Tuesday and will then play in the Newton Tournament April 13.
