DES MOINES — Competing for the third time in a five-day stretch apparently had little detrimental effect on the Perry swimmers.

The Jayettes began the week with a triple-dual at Des Moines North Tuesday, then swam in a triple-dual Thursday at Indianola before spending Saturday back at the North pool for the annual Polar Bear Invitational.

Given the schedule, Perry could perhaps be excused for results from Saturday that revealed a tired team, but instead the time sheets sparkled with six more personal-best (PB) individual efforts and a strong team performance that had the Jayettes listed third in the six-team meet.

Storm Lake won the invite with 274 points, with Des Moines Hoover second at 198 and Perry third at 183. Although the Jayettes left the 100 butterfly open, they topped two teams — Algona (158) and Oskaloosa (153) — that had scored narrow wins over Perry throughout the season. Host DM North was sixth with 130 points.

Breanna Penenger must find the waters in the North pool exactly to her liking, as she continued her recent onslaught of resetting her own previous best in the 500 freestyle, this time by winning in 6 minutes, 1.49 seconds. Penenger also touched first in the 200 free in a PB of 2:14.11, with teammate Anna Ridnour fifth in 2:24.73.

Senior captain Haley Vaughn used a new personal mark of 1:08.65 to place third in the 100 backstroke, with her sister, freshman Sarah, placing sixth in 1:16.44. The elder Vaughn was also third in the 200 individual medley after a clocking of 2:29.71.

Dannah Karolus was sixth, and Avery Miner eighth, in the 50 free in 29.38 and 32.35, respectively, with the same duo placing 6-8 in the 100 free in 1:05.86 and 1:08.8. Both swims were new PB marks for Miner.

Ridnour swam to sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:27.77, with Kaira Francis swimming in the junior varsity 50 free (40.13) and 100 free (a new PB of 1:32.21).

Perry was third in all three relays. Penenger, Miner and the Vaughn sisters completed the 200 medley relay in 2:19.06, with Ridnour, Karolus and the Vaughn tandem finishing the 200 free relay in 1:56.37 while the foursome of Sarah Vaughn, Miner, Karolus and Peneger posted a 4:27.19 in the 400 free relay.

A Tuesday trip to Newton for a triple-dual that will also include Oskaloosa is the next action for Perry.
