Jayettes claim pair of victories in own invitational

Thursday’s Jayette Invitational generated many smiles for the hosts, as Perry claimed wins in two of their four matches.

Perry (6-26) fell to Ballard, 21-19 and 21-12 to open play, but bounced back for a 21-15 and 21-12 win over Des Moines Hoover. Roland-Story downed Perry, 21-14 and 21-11, but ended competition by responding to the setback with a strong effort in topping Saydel, 21-10 and 21-8.

Kacy Nevitt had a strong invite for the hosts, and was particularly effective in both wins, recording seven kills against the Huskies and six against the Eagles, with Jasmine Shriver adding six kills against Saydel. Nevitt finished with 20 total kills and Shriver with 11, with Gabby West tallying eight kills. Mackenzie Ayers had six kills, Quinn Whiton five, Jayna Kenney three and Peyton Tunink one.

Whiton distributed 41 assists to lead Perry. Kenney and West tallied three assists apiece, with Magley Orellana adding two. Ayers, Nevitt and Stephanie Garcia aided the cause with single assists apiece.

Orellana led the team with 16 digs, with Nevitt contributing 12 and Ayers nine. Kenney and Garcia each had seven digs, Shriver six, West five and Tunink and Whiton three apiece.

Nevitt finished with 2.5 blocks and West 1.5, with Ayers and Kenney each having one block.

Nevitt had six aces on 15-of-23 serving, with Whiton 24-28-1 and Shriver 22-26-1. Ayers was 20-20-4, Orellana 19-21-4, Kenney 18-19-1 and Tunink 4-4-1.

Roland-Story won the invite team title with a 4-0 mark after adding wins of 21-8 and 21-7 over Ballard, of 21-2 and 21-6 over Hoover and of 21-6 and 21-5 over Saydel in addition to their victory over Perry. Ballard finished 3-1, with wins over Perry and also over Hoover (21-16 and 21-18) and Saydel (21-18, 14-21 and 15-6). Saydel finished 0-4 and Hoover 1-3 after the Huskies topped the Eagles 21-17, 16-21 and 15-9.

Ayers, Garcia and West will be honored October 11 when Perry hosts Carlisle for Senior Night. Perry will then conclude their regular season by competing in the Knoxville Tournament October 13.
