DES MOINES — For nearly 70 minutes host Des Moines North gave the Perry girls soccer team all the Jayettes could handle. Unfortunately for the hosts, Perry found the back of the net twice in a three-minute span to help post a 7-3 final in favor of the visitors.
Molly Lutmer scored in the 11th minute for Perry, with Jacqueline Guardado beating the keeper off a Mariah McNamara assist 31 seconds later. Lutmer tickled the twine again in the 20th minute, with a Guardado goal with 92 seconds left in the half sending Perry into the break with a 4-3 lead.
North held tough for most of the second half, but it was the Perry defense that was the story, as goalie Selena Garcia was untested after the intermission.
Guardado made it 5-3 in the 68th minute, with Bryn Steffen putting one past the keeper not quite three minutes later for a 6-3 edge. An own goal with 5:53 by the Polar Bear defense provided the final margin.
The Jayette junior varsity and freshmen teams traveled to Ankeny Monday, where the Hawks were less than accommodating hosts.
The JV were blanked, 10-0, with the mercy rule ending the game with five minutes to play. Carly Herrera had a shot on goal for Perry, with goalie Gaby Chavez making five saves.
Frosh keeper Cielo Castillo had five saves in the freshman game, but it was not enough as Ankeny claimed a 5-3 win. Lutmer had two goals for the Jayettes, with Guardado adding a score.
Perry is off until Saturday when they make their annual visit to the Newton Tournament.
