The Perry girls soccer team has traditionally started their season by facing Raccoon River Conference foe Winterset. For the past three years, that has meant beginning the year on a sour note, as the Huskies were the winners three straight, by a combined scores of 10-2.
The Jayettes ended their opening game skid Tuesday at Dewey Field when freshman Jacqueline Guardado came off the bench to beat the keeper at 32:19 on a Molly Lutmer assist. The Perry defense made the goal stand up, with Selena Garcia making eight saves, as the hosts claimed a 1-0 victory.
Gaby Chavez had seven saves in goal for Perry in the junior varsity game, but Winterset emerged with a 4-0 win. The freshman game was played to a scoreless tie. Lutmer had two shots on goal, with goalie Cielo Castillo turning aside three would-be goals.
Perry returns to action Thursday when they host RRC rival Carlisle. The contest will be varsity only, starting at 5:30 p.m.
